Art at Sherborne Station

The 150th anniversary of the opening of Sherborne Station has given Sherborne In Bloom a great opportunity to contribute to this important event.

Looking around the station we were conscious that Platform 2 often appeared dark and dim, surrounded as it is by foliage and an overhanging roof. This is where visitors to the town from the stations from London Waterloo alight and from where passengers to Exeter and the West Country depart. What could we do to regenerate Platform 2?

Young people from Sherborne School set up a photographic competition for themselves and members of the Sherborne Bradford Abbas Camera Club.  The theme of the photos was ‘Sherborne’s Heritage’ and we encouraged the photographers to portray both old and new aspects of the town.

Sixteen of the best photographs were chosen for display on the Station. These were made into 2ft x 2ft weatherproof, vandal-proof signs by Alpha Signs of Yeovil and, with permission from South West Trains, affixed to the wall alongside Platform 2.

This is the only photographic exhibition you can view from a moving train!

Platform 2 now has a permanent reminder of Sherborne’s heritage which we hope would impress the pioneers who built the station 150 years ago!

South West In Bloom
This year the town was unable to compete in the South West in Bloom competition, after reaching and maintaining the highest standard of excellence winning four GOLD awards over four consecutive years; bringing to the town the highest accolade it can gain. There is much hope that next year the town can rejoin the competition and go one step further and reach the national UK Britain in Bloom finals.
