Sherborne In Bloom Judging Day

July 17 was the big day in the ‘Sherborne In Bloom’ calendar.

We were visited by the two judges from Southwest In Bloom who will assess our performance and deliver their judgement on our town!

It was also prize-giving for the local ‘Growing For Gold’ competition, where cups and certificates were awarded for the best in each category.

In the ‘Southwest In Bloom’ competition we compete against other small towns in the region and we are awarded marks based on floral displays, permanent landscaping, conservation and recycling, environmental quality and public awareness. On 17 July we gave the judges an escorted tour of the town where we, hopefully, demonstrated our abilities in these areas.

We also have to produce a portfolio which the judges take away that provides evidence of our town in bloom throughout the year.

The day was strenuous, demanding but ultimately rewarding for all concerned. Yes, it’s hard work to prepare for such an event and a little nerve-wracking to have your efforts assessed on the fly by professional judges who are trained to spot every little imperfection. But, at the same time, we were all inspired by the efforts of everyone who has made the town look so wonderful. This includes all the gardeners, volunteers, adopt-a-plotters and, especially, the prizewinners of ‘Growing For Gold’.

Here the prize-winners are shown in the grounds of Sherborne Castle where the prize-giving ceremony took place.

Results of the Southwest In Bloom competition will be announced at an awards ceremony on 18 September at Plymouth.

But whatever happens, judging day reminded us just how proud we can be of our community and our town. Thanks to everyone who made the day such a success!

Photography Exhibition

‘Sherbone In Bloom’ week is now here and is being celebrated by showing all the photos that photographers from the Sherborne Bradford Abbas Camera Club have taken around the town.

Over 300 photographs will be exhibited at the Cheap Street Church Hal, Monday to Saturday, 14 – 19 July.

Is your garden in the show? The only way to find out is to come to the exhibition and find out! All are welcome and entrance is free.

Also in the exhibition will be names and photographs of the winners of the ‘Growing For Gold’ competitions and you’ll also be able to buy charming souvenirs of Sherborne In Bloom.

The photographers will be manning the exhibition and are looking forward to welcoming you!
