Adopt-A-Plod
Thursday 26 June was Gryphon School’s ‘Enterprise Day’ where students spread out around the town doing good works.
Their contribution to Sherborne In Bloom was to go round many of the adopt-a-plots and help tidy up and plant ready for this year’s floral displays.
Here a group of kids are working to improve the garden outside Sherborne Police Station. This patch was planted with a variety of flowering shrubs supplied by Castle Gardens. Let’s hope the boys in blue will have plenty of time to keep the plot clean, tidy and watered in the weeks and months ahead!
The pupils seemed to enjoy their day out (at least it wasn’t raining) and very ably demonstrated the considerable benefits of child labour in Sherborne’s ‘Bloom’ efforts.
Shopping Bags

Sherborne In Bloom Shopping Bags
As part of the town’s effort to become a plastic bag-free zone, Sherborne In Bloom is sponsoring its own shopping bags.
These are eco-friendly, biodegradable jute bags and are big enough to carry all your shopping.
Jute is environmentally friendly and when discarded will decompose leaving only valuable nutrients.
Made in India under strict working conditions and transported to this country by ship to avoid air pollution, Jute bags are totally biodegradable using only natural materials and traditional skills to combat a distinctly modern, world pollution problem. Jute bags are extremely durable – one Jute bag will last longer than many thousands of plastic bags and unlike its plastic counterpart, when finally discarded a Jute bag will naturally decompose.
The bags are now available in shops around the town and all proceeds from the bags go to Sherborne In Bloom.
You can get your ‘Sherborne In Bloom’ shopping bag at one of these outlets:
Tourist Information Centre, Digby Road
Sherborne Town Council – Manor House, Newland
Mid West Office Supplies, Cheap Street
Parsons Butchers, Cheap Street
Gryphon School (Lizzie Kingsbury)
Please support Sherborne In Bloom by buying a shopping bag when you see one in the town.
Or why not buy two and give one to a friend?
Let’s all say ‘NO’ to plastic bags!
Mucker Inners Required!
Would you like to muck in with Sherborne In Bloom?
It’s the ‘Growing For Gold’ season again and Sherborne is shaping up for another blooming fine season!
Hundreds of volunteers around the town made last year’s Sherborne In Bloom such a success. People dug and weeded and sowed and planted and watered and sweated and toiled – and the result was golden. We won Gold.
And guess what? We want to do it all over again.
If Sherborne can win another Gold this year we could be on track for ‘Britain In Bloom’ next year. That would really put our town on the map and enhance our community’s prestige and reputation.
Can you garden, or would you like to learn? Then why not volunteer to help look after one of the adopt-a-plots near you? Willing hands are urgently needed to bring our plots up to scratch.
Can you help by giving your time, for example, to distribute posters around the town, or muck in and help with any number of admin tasks?
Or would you rather muck in by giving money? Sponsors are required for a number of high-visibility projects that will contribute to Sherborne’s ‘In Bloom’ entry. Every penny of your contribution will help us present the town in the best possible light when the Royal Horticultural Society judges come to visit the town.
Please volunteer whatever and however you can.
